Analogical Reasoning and Darwin's Microscope

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perception:

The human ability for analogical Reasoning is limitless.

The hunt for Red October,  Blue Moon, Silver Bullet, Low Life, Fast Lane, Warm Heart, Cold Blooded, Revolution
(Yellow October?, Green Moon?, Purple Bullet?, Micro Life, Rapid Lane... etc.)

Even if we understand why the analogies fail when they are altered (i.e. are grounded to stimuli associated with other emotions), it doesn't change how we
feel about these new arrangements.  This is to demonstrate, that we don't always -- reason -- about things exclusisvely.

Analogical Reasoning

This terms is derived from ??a????a meaning proportion.  It connotes* an inference or argument from one particular to the other.  We use this every day.  It helps us problem solve, integrate perception, memory, creativity and communication (natural or other language).

If x is to y describes a particular relation, and it is one of scale then,
they must share key properties, or be of the same kind.

if (x,y) is a relation of scale, for instance: a

(micro-processor, compared to a motherboard)

or
(computer, compared to the Internet)
the objects are the same in KIND (gronded in their funtion),
but differ as a function of SCALE.  Similarly:

(microeconomics, compared to macroeconomics)
again, they are the same KIND of activity, economic, yet differ
as a matter of scale, and the qualities that are particular to each.
Microeconomics pertains to Househholds and invidividual choice;
Macro pertains to the Sum of these choices, in addition to government
policy, taxation, etc.  Though, having unique functions according to scale
this is consistent with the general micro/macro relationship.

The human body is the same KIND of thing as a cell; living, intelligent,
has a boundary, needs energy, produces waste, reproduces.  Though,
at larges scales, we 'embody' many different kinds of cells.

Darwin's Microscope

When we look through a microscope, what do we expect to find?  Well, even if we had
never done so before, the word "scope" means the 'range' of a given phenomenon.
'Micro' obviously means small, so, "small-range" seems to be the approximate
meaning. Thus, when we look through the scope (if it's optical) through the lens we
see into the world of the Small.  I know, this is remedial.

But what if we looked through a microscope and saw into a different dimension altogether?
One that was neither Small, nor Large, nor of Any size.  What if "microscope" referred to
devices that when you look through, you see rainbow-like colors in constant flux! With no
rhyme or reason.  In fact, you might see no color at all.  And there's no relationship between
what's in the lens, and anything around you.

"Well, why would they NAME it that, if the name has nothing to do with "small things" but,
randomly fluctuating colors?"

This is an excellent question.  The answer is that: no reasonable person would name this device
a 'microscope' other than to, perhaps, SELL microscopes to people who WANTED to
understand the world of small things.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps the 'Free Market' will save us!

"Well, there's a problem with this business plan" you say, "when people realize these devices
don't do what they thought they did, they'll probably return them or get angry."  One would
certainly hope so.  But, what if no one really KNEW what the small world looks like?
What if, we brough microscopes to a culture isolated from modern society living in the jungle?
Or what if we brouth microscopes to Medeival Europe? or Ancient Rome?

Well, if we think of all the progress that has been made because of microscopes, understanding
that bacteria cause infections, seeing that they too are living, that the entire scale of small things,
has small life forms, etc.  To imagine all progress stemming from this being erased from
humanity demonstrates that the THINGS we use, the WORDS that describe them, e.g.
WHAT they're said to perform or reveal, MATTER.

Common Sense

Common Sense is the "basic level of practical knowledge and judgment that we all need to help us live in a reasonable and safe way".

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
False analogy

Epistemology is the "branch of philosophy concerned with the nature and scope (limitations) of knowledge."  The NATURE and SCOPE, which is to say, the QUALITY (of a substance, relation,
form or behavior) and the extent or SCALE (i.e. MAGNITUDE or BOUNDARIES of time and
space, or degre).

We see that the basis of KNOWLEDGE itself is concerned with quality (classes of things) and
scale (extent, or degree of difference between same typed things).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What Analogies are SUPPOSED to do.

" Analogies should also make those abstractions easier to understand and give confidence to the ones using them."

"analogy is a systematic and universal feature of natural languages, with identifiable and law-like characteristics which explain how the meanings of words in a sentence are interdependent."

"Keith Holyoak and Paul Thagard maintain that the "coherence" of an analogy depends on structural consistency, semantic similarity and purpose."

It is not that the micro-macro distinction is a "poor" analogy, or an inprecise, or even inaccurate, it
is the corruption of analogy; It is a systematic and precise exploitation of our most powerful cognitive abilities, to represent one thing under pretense of another, when they are diametric, polar, opposites, in every single possible way categorically bar none.

It's not that, Light is weird, time is weird, so MIND must be these things.. it's that What we experience, is an explicit delusion, and to constrain
the natural world per our Creed is fucking foolish arrogance, stupid Dawkins and Darwin.
